CUB PACKS

History, teamwork, fun, games and one of Ontario's most haunted buildings...

The HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel has put together a programme especially for Cub Packs that encourages teamwork, problem solving and creativity while cubs participate, learn and play in our unique and historical setting.

The CUB PACK sleepover includes:
  1. Mug shot and finger printing: Each cub will be fingerprinted, and get an "I've done time at the HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel" mug shot – these items will be presented to them as a certificate at the end of the program.

  2. What did prisoners eat? Cubs will learn what kinds of food prisoners ate when the building operated as a prison, as well as help to prepare, and taste, samples.

  3. Hangman tournament: In honour of hosting the last public hanging in Canada, we will hold a hangman tournament with some basic jail and cub-related words – nothing too difficult, but that is still a challenge for the kids to figure out.

  4. Ghost stories: Told either in solitary confinement or the hostel's back courtyard (weather permitting), the cubs will hear (and tell) a few simple ghost stories – these stories will not relate to our regular tour and are fun and enjoyable for younger aged children.

  5. Jail Olympics (weather permitting): Outdoor fun and games for the kids to participate in (such as races, relays, etc.) – held either in the back courtyard or the parking lot.

  6. Ghostbusters: Cubs cut out paper-ghosts, which are then scattered throughout the play area. Divided into teams and provided with one straw each, they have to "catch" as many ghosts as they can – without using their hands! Using the straws and their own breath, they must catch the ghosts, and bring them to their teams' bin. The team with the most ghosts caught wins!

  7. Carleton County Gaol Heritage Centre Activity Book: This booklet contains word games, colouring pages, puzzles and other paper-based activities the cubs can do at the hostel or at home.

  8. Mug-up late evening before bedtime.

  9. Additional Option: Each cub is provided a special edition "Smooth Criminal" t-shirt.
Please note: The actual number and types of activities being offered will be finalized and agreed upon once we have a reasonable estimate as to the final number of participants; some activities may be dictated by the weather at the time of arrival.
