The HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel is always on the lookout for interested and enthusiastic work-release prisoners who can help in our efforts to preserve and tell the story of the old Carleton County Gaol, and to bring out the best of Ottawa for our hostel’s inmates. Whether you’re 16 or 60, we’re sure to have a sentencing opportunity for you (complete with hard labour)!
Past projects and activities – carried out by volunteers, placement and GAP students – have included:
- Organizing and running a BBQ fundraiser
- Serving as an Ottawa tour guide for hostel guests
- Researching the Carleton County Gaol’s history
- Writing and designing the new Carleton County Gaol Heritage Centre displays
- Planning and hosting activities for hostel guests, such as adventure excursions (white water rafting, canoeing, hiking), beach outings, and museum visits
Areas we’re presently looking for volunteers to help out with include:
- Data entry (e.g. from one of the gaol’s original registers)
- Gardeners (people with green thumbs to spruce up our flower beds)
- Programming creation (organized activities for various age groups that will help them get excited, and learn, about the gaol)
- Programming delivery (carrying out already developed programmes and activities for various age groups, or assisting someone else with their delivery)
- Research organization (to help consolidate and organize research materials, reports, and old clippings)
If you’re interested in any of the above punishment opportunities, or have your own ideas about how you can help us, please CONTACT US. |
